Florida Department of Health in Martin County Maintains National Accreditation Status Through the Public Health Accreditation Board
The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) reaccredited the Florida Department of Health, which includes the Martin County Health Department, as an integrated health department for another five years. This seal of accreditation signifies that the unified Florida Department of Health, which includes the State Health Office and the 67 county health departments, meets or exceeds national standards for public health performance management and continuous quality improvement. The Department demonstrated a focus on accountability and performance to improve the health of communities throughout the state.

The Florida Department of Health in Martin County has lifted a health alert for the presence of harmful blue-green algal toxins for the waters in the C-44 canal near the St. Lucie Lock in Stuart, the eastern shoreline of Lake Okeechobee and at Port Mayaca in Indiantown following water sample results taken by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Samples in those areas have not detected the presence of microcystin toxins for 30 days or more.

Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies in Jensen Beach
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County is confirming that a raccoon found at Indian RiverSide Park in Jensen Beach has tested positive for rabies. Fortunately, a dog who came in contact with the raccoon was previously vaccinated for rabies and will be treated with a booster shot. There was no human exposure to the raccoon.

The Florida Department of Health in Martin County is continuing a Health Alert for the presence of harmful blue green algal toxins in the waters near Port Mayaca. This is in response to water samples taken by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on July 26. The public should exercise caution in and around Port Mayaca.

Health Officials Issue Blue-Green Algae Bloom Alert for Timer Powers Park in Indiantown
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County has issued a Health Alert for the presence of harmful blue green algal toxins in the C-44 canal by Timer Powers Park in Indiantown. This is in response to a water sample taken on June 2. The public should exercise caution in and around the canal near the park.
On March 12, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) authorized State WIC Agencies to enhance the WIC benefit for a period of four months, expanding the vegetable and fruit voucher from $9/month for children and $11/month for women to $35 per month, per participant. WIC’s vegetable and fruit voucher is known as the Cash Value Benefit (CVB). The CVB is credited with improving the dietary quality of WIC participants and reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity among WIC toddlers.

Summer is Here! Tips for a Safe and Healthy Summer
As residents plan for the Memorial Day weekend, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH-Martin) offers some tips to keep residents and visitors safe and healthy this summer.
Working in partnership with Martin County Emergency Management and the Medical Reserve Corps, the Florida Department of Health in Martin is hosting a series of special clinics to offer the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine.
As more vaccine is now available in the community and across the Treasure Coast, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH-Martin) and Martin County Emergency Management are preparing to close the COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Treasure Coast Square Mall.
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH-Martin) is issuing a health advisory for the vicinity of the Port Mayaca Lock based on water sampling results from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP conducted sampling in the S308 canal and found the presence of Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. DOH recommends that residents and visitors avoid contact with algae. In addition, an advisory remains in place for the vicinity of the St Lucie Lock and Phipps Park in Stuart.

Martin County Bacterial Levels Elevated
Following heavy rains in Martin County this week an advisory is now in effect for the waters near the Roosevelt Bridge, the Old Palm City Bridge at Leighton Park, and Sandsprit Park. Results from water samples taken on Thursday showed higher than normal levels of enteric bacteria.
In anticipation of afternoon rainstorms, the Florida Department of Health is adjusting the COVID-19 testing schedule in Golden Gate to begin at 10:00 am tomorrow, Wednesday, May 20.

With the start of the new school year just a few weeks away, the Florida Department of Health is urging parents and caregivers to be sure that their student’s immunizations are up to date for school entry.
On July 18, staff from the Florida Department of Health in Martin County and members of the Martin County Sheriff’s Community Policing Unit, led by Sergeant George Yacobellis, met to discuss plans to work in collaboration to provide hepatitis A education and encourage vaccination throughout the community.
Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees met with Martin County elected officials and community stakeholders on Wednesday, July 10th to address the Hepatitis A outbreak that has impacted Martin County and other communities across Florida. In attendance were state legislators, local government officials, the sheriff’s office and health care and other community stakeholders.

The Florida Department of Health is encouraging vaccination and good hygiene to stop the spread of hepatitis A in the community.
With support from local, regional and state personnel, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County has concluded its investigation into the 19 confirmed cases of hepatitis A in the community ranging from April 1-19. The Florida Department of Health has received genetic test results from CDC regarding the cases of hepatitis A in Martin County. Findings indicate that there were multiple introductions of the virus into the community, with no common link, which are consistent with the person-to-person spread seen in outbreaks nationwide. The genetic testing showed a close linkage between the virus circulating in Martin county and outbreak related cases in 17 other states.

Health Officials Issue Mosquito Borne Illness Advisory - Sentinel chickens continue to detect West Nile Virus
The Florida Department of Health, Martin County Board of County Commissioners and the Town of Jupiter Island urge residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites following confirmations of West Nile virus in sentinel chicken flocks in the Hobe Sound/Jupiter Island area. Martin County conducts routine testing for mosquito-borne viruses using chicken flocks in various areas of the county. At this time, there are no suspected or confirmed human cases in the county, though the risk of transmission to humans has increased.

Florida Health Advises Caution when Red Tide is Present
The Florida Department of Health in Martin County is reminding residents and visitors to use caution when on the beach or in waters with high concentrations of red tide. Protect your family and pets by staying away from affected areas until the blooms move further offshore or they go away. Red tide is a naturally occurring algae that has been documented along Florida’s Gulf Coast since the 1840s and occurs nearly every year. Because the blooms are patchy, other local beaches may be okay to visit.

Martin County, FL — Based on recent test results from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH) is updating a health advisory to include the waters along the St. Lucie Canal near Martin Highway and the waters south of Northwest Alice Street, East of Dixie Highway in Stuart. Test results found the presence of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, with an elevated microcystin toxin level.

DEP conducted sampling in the area of C44S80 St. Lucie Lock and found the presence of Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, with an elevated Microcystin toxin level. DOH recommends residents and visitors to avoid contact with algae.
