Spread Holiday Cheer, Not the Flu

By Renay Rouse

December 13, 2016

The holiday season has arrived on the Treasure Coast. So many of us enjoy the gatherings and seasonal foods, but these gathering also provide the opportunity to share colds and flu.

Getting vaccinated every year is the best way to prevent the spread of the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months be vaccinated and vaccination is especially important for those who are pregnant or have chronic health conditions. The nasal spray vaccine is not recommended this year because of concerns about its effectiveness.

Practice Prevention:

  • Cover your cough and sneeze
  • Wash your hands often
  • Exercise and eat nutritious foods
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Get a flu shot

Free Flu Clings: The Florida Department of Health in Martin County has developed colorful static clings, which stick to bathroom mirrors or glass, with reminders to “Shoo the Flu”. To request free flu clings for your office, call 772-221-4000 ext. 2210.
