FDOH in Martin Announces FL Healthy Babies Community Meeting

By Renay Rouse

June 22, 2016

The Florida Department of Health in Martin County is pleased to announce it will be hosting a community meeting to discuss Florida Healthy Babies. Florida Healthy Babies is a collaborative statewide initiative designed to positively influence social determinants of health and reduce racial disparities in infant mortality. The meeting will take place at the 10th Street Community Center in Stuart, on June 29 at 6:00 pm.

The evening will feature a screening and discussion of “When the Bough Breaks”, a documentary aired on PBS about the possible link between racism and birth outcomes.

“There are many factors that affect health.” said Karlette Peck, Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Martin County. “We are inviting the community to this special forum so we can share information about the various factors and work together to develop solutions for protecting and promoting the health of babies in our community.”

Recently, the department invested $1.4 million in the Florida Healthy Babies initiative, which is an effort of the department’s Health Equity Program Council. The Health Equity Program Council focuses on helping all Floridians achieve health equity. Part of the funding was provided to all 67 counties to conduct an enhanced data analysis of infant mortality and to host community-action planning meetings to address disparities in infant mortality.
