June 16, 2021

In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County is offering free HIV, STD and Hepatitis C testing on Friday, June 25 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. HIV and Hepatitis C test results will be available in about 15 minutes and no appointment is needed.

National HIV Testing Day is observed each year on June 27 to emphasize and encourage HIV testing. The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime and persons at increased risk for HIV infection be tested at least annually.

With early diagnosis, individuals can begin appropriate treatment, resulting in better health outcomes. HIV-negative individuals are encouraged to reduce the chance of contracting HIV by using prevention strategies. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication is available through the Florida Department of Health in Martin County. PrEP is a once-daily pill that can reduce the chance of acquiring HIV in HIV-negative individuals. PrEP should be used in conjunction with other prevention methods like condoms to reduce the chance of infection. According to CDC, taking PrEP daily reduces the chance of getting HIV by more than 90 percent.
